It was a dreary and rainy day outside this past January when Belle (a chocolate Labrador) and her owner Carol Gehesen visited Hospice patients and other residents at Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Walkersville. Belle, oblivious to the weather, eagerly met and greeted everyone she saw along the way. She gave them kisses. She gave them love. She gave them a reason to smile.

Carol tells of an Alzheimer’s patient who often does not respond, but who smiles when Belle comes to say hello. Another resident who can no longer speak actually laughs out loud when he receives kisses from the lovable Lab.

“Those of us who have pets know that they alone know the secrets in our hearts,” says Carol. “We can tell them anything and they still cuddle with us and love us.” Residents of a nursing home who do not have animals near them on a daily basis, but who perhaps had an animal when they were growing up, relate to the HosPets in a very special way, she adds. Memories are often sparked and a special companionship can begin.

HosPets and their owners both go through training. The animals are seen by a veterinarian to assure that they are in good health before they go on visits. They are also tested on basic commands and aptitude. HosPets and owners must meet standards set forth by the Delta Society’s Pet Partners Program. Owners are also required to attend Hospice 101 and Hospice Direct Service Training.
